Set in both Sicily and mainland Italy, the film follows the adventures of a man nicknamed Mimi, who is asked to rig a local election. Instead, he votes for a Communist representative. To get away from the Mafia, he leaves his wife and falls for and lives with a female political activist. Soon, other situations happen that leave Mimi questioning the life he has and what he will do next.
The screenplay was adapted, very loosely, for the 1977 film Which Way Is Up? starring Richard Pryor.
Giancarlo Giannini starred in three other films Wertmuller made during this period: Love and Anarchy, Swept Away and Seven Beauties.
